Oprah was given to her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee to be raised, and as her grandmother taught her to read at an early age, at age three Oprah was reciting poems and Bible verses in local churches. Even with many hardships from her physical environment, she enjoyed the loving support of her grandmother and the church community, who cherished her as a gifted child. Oprah never wasted a minute in her young youth as her imaginative mind is always on something that seemed to be boring, and all through her younger years, the farm animals became her only friends, as she used them for giving them parts in a play, and they were also used them for playing games.
The Legacy |
At age six, Oprah went to live with her mother and siblings in Milwaukee, so they lived in one room, and her mother worked long hours, and she was too tired to give attention to the kids, so Oprah began to
disobey for attention. With Oprah being unhappy, she was sent to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee, who was now married to Zelma, Oprah's stepmother. With them, she had to obey and was forced to do pages of addition and subtraction questions each day, and on Sundays she went to church, where she attended Sunday School and had recitals. Until, one day, her mother sent for her to live with them in a house because she was pregnant. After a troubled, abusive time, her father called, and it was decided that she'd go back to Nashville. Oprah knew that in Nashville she had to obey her father and stepmother, and that she could not be a problem any longer. She was given new clothes, a set of rules, a twelve o'clock curfew, and some tasks; she had to read and do a book report on a book each week, as well as memorize five new words each day, playing the angel. If she hadn't done her tasks she would not be given any food. Oprah had good study habits. They probably came from one of the most influential people of her life, and also her fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan also became a influential person too.
Oprah attended Nashville East High School. She was well liked by the students and teachers. She continued with her public speaking to churches and woman's groups. At high school Oprah signed up for public speaking and drama classes. She loved performing and having the attention of the audience. In her last year of high school her mind was made up that she had to have a job that had something to do with speaking or drama, and the same year she was elected school president, and therefore was sent to the beginning of her career, The White House Conference of Youth. This is where Oprah met with the president, Richard Nixon, and school representatives from all over the country.
The last year of high school brought a lot of fulfillment and, she went to Hollywood where she saw production studios, and when her drama class was rehearsing, a local radio station, VOL, asked her if she'd like to read on the radio. They gave her a job reading the news. Oprah entered a public speaking contest that had a scholarship to Tennessee State University as a grand prize, and she won the scholarship and started taking a degree in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. That year she worked at the radio station and studied at night. Despite all of this she entered the Miss Black Tennessee contest,
and, once again, she surprised herself by winning.
The local CBS television station offered her a job as a co-anchor, and she turned it down three times, but then she spoke to her speech professor about it, and he told her that this was her chance to launch her career. At age nineteen Oprah finally accepted the job and went to the interview pretending that she was Barbara Walters....
Then, a talk show in Chicago called "A.M. Chicago, offered her the job, and in September of 1985 they changed the name of the show to "The Oprah Winfrey Show." On September 8, 1986 the show was broadcast-ed nationally. In June of 1987, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" won three Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Direction, Host, and..., Talk/Service Programs.
The next year, the show won a Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Talk/Service Program. In 1988 Oprah received the International Radio and Television Society's "Broadcaster of the Year" Award, and now, the OWN Oprah Winfrey Network travels overseas with an announcing at O'Magazine. Try: Dr. Oz Green Drink Recipe:
2 apples, cored
2 big handfuls of spinach
1/2 cup of chopped parsley
1 celery stick, chopped
1 thumbnail length of ginger root, peeled
1 lemon - juice only (use peel slice for zest)
1 medium cucumber
Place ingredients in a blender, add 4 oz. spring water or a handful of ice cubes, then puree quickly for one minute. Makes two glasses of Dr. OZ’s green drink. The green drink has a strong taste and if you are used to drinking soda or sweet tea, the taste will take some getting used to. Dr. Oz suggests adding other items at first to sweeten the green drink to your taste.
Optional ingredients:
2nd cucumber
raw carrot
unsweetened fruit juice
banana
